Rory McIlroy is definitely bing good at winning major events. Just this Thursday he showed exactly why he is a champion as he showed no visible effects from his collapse on Sunday at the Masters. McIlroy 22 made probably the hardest test in golf look as if it were just child’s play with a 6 under 65 as he built the biggest lead in 18 holes at the U.S Open ever seen in 35 years.

McIlroy just missed a single green, he is now the only player in the large 156 man field who has not had a bogey. This is how he managed to get up on there with the best on the leaderboard after he opened the round for the third time in his previous four majors.

McIlroy said It felt like quite a simple 65, I didnt do much wrong. He said that trouble has just been to finish them.

There were a few questions floating around as to how McIlroy would play after the recent clamity that hit him at a major round, when a four shot lead was squandered at the Augusta National with 80 in the final round. However he has managed to recover well from the meltdown, and has bounced back at the prestigious U.S. Open so that everyone could believe him.

McIlroy said I dont know if it says that Ive got a short memory, I took the experience from Augusta, and I learned a lot from it. But, yeah, I mean youre going into the U.S. Open. You cant be thinking about whats happened before. Youve got to just be thinking about this week, and how you can best prepare, and how you can get yourself around the golf course.

The route that McIlroy took was unlike what other players have done on a day which was mostly overcast with light showers as he finished his round.

Schwartzel said Its a long way to go, but its nice to get yourself in contention, If you start falling too far behind on a tough golf course, things can get a little bit too far in front of you. You need to stay in there with a chance. This is definitely going to put McLlroy ahead of the pack.
